Anuradhapura is an ancient sacred city that was established as an early settlement in Sri Lanka. Dating back to the third century BC, Anuradhapura is said to be established by a prince from India. This magnificent city of palaces, temples and monuments flourished for 1,300 years but was abandoned after it was invaded in the late 10th century.
A day tour of Anuradhapura from Colombo will take you on a journey to explore some of the most significant landmarks and monuments in this UNESCO World Heritage site. Upon arrival, you will go on a walking tour of the city's most prominent sites, including the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, which is believed to be the oldest living tree in the world, and is a significant site for Buddhists.
You'll then visit the Ruwanweli Maha Stupa, one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka, which is said to enshrine the relics of the Buddha. After that, you'll explore the Jethawanarama Stupa, one of the tallest stupas in the world, and the Abayagiri Stupa, another impressive structure that dates back to the 1st century BC.
Another site worth visiting is the Kuttam Pokuna, also known as the "Twin Ponds," which were built over 2,000 years ago as part of a sophisticated water supply system. These ponds are considered to be among the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan hydraulic engineering.
For instance, you may visit the Samadhi Buddha Statue, an iconic sculpture that is considered to be one of the finest examples of Anuradhapura art. The statue depicts the Buddha in deep meditation, and its serene beauty is sure to leave a lasting impression.
The Moonstone, a beautifully carved semicircular slab that is commonly found at the entrance of ancient Sri Lankan buildings.
